About BeNeDrone
Research on safe and responsible medical drones
Drones in healthcare? It may sound futuristic, but worldwide there is already extensive experimentation with drones that transport medicines, blood, or even organs. These so-called UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) can literally make the difference between life and death in emergencies. They deliver what is needed at lightning speed and effortlessly bypass traffic jams or other obstacles on the ground. That saves time and saves lives.
But before drones can truly add value to emergency medical care, the benefits -Â both medical and economic -Â must be clearly mapped out. Imagine a patient in Goes urgently needing blood. Maastricht and Leuven have it in stock, but which hospital can deliver it fastest? And is a drone even allowed to fly from Belgium to the Netherlands just like that? Which route is the fastest, the safest, and legally permitted?
BeNeDrone is exploring how drones can be deployed efficiently, safely, and legally, with close attention to regulations and safety. In addition, the project creates (virtual) training environments that bring these routes to life so that medical professionals, policymakers, and aviation authorities can prepare for the deployment of drones. BeNeDrone is not a futuristic experiment, but a realistic step toward the safe and widely accepted use of medical drones. With strong partners, shared knowledge, and a clear goal: saving lives!
