Pop-up exhibition “Stilstaan bij Water”
A pop-up exhibition that invited visitors to look at water in a different way.In May 2024, the Watersnoodmuseum, in collaboration with the municipality of Puurs-Sint-Amands, organised the pop-up exhibition ‘Reflecting on Water’ along a popular walking and cycling route on the Scheldt. The exhibition invited passers-by to pause, both literally and figuratively, to reflect on the role of water in our daily lives and the challenges posed by climate change.Using accessible information, the exhibition highlighted which recent floods have affected Belgium, how these were responded to, and what measures are being taken to better protect our environment against high water levels. By staging the exhibition in a public space, walkers and cyclists were able to learn about the impact of water on the landscape and our living environment in an accessible way.The exhibition formed part of the collaboration within (Be)Leefbare Schelde, in which partners work to bring the heritage and landscape of the Scheldt delta to life. Through initiatives such as ‘Stilstaan bij Water’, visitors are invited not only to look back at the past, but also to reflect on the future of living with water.

Taken to the ever-changing Delta
On Saturday 14 September 2024, a special event took place at the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk. Poets, musicians and other artists took visitors on a journey to the water — to the ever-changing Delta. Through words, sounds and images, the dynamism and power of water were brought to life in an impressive way.
The festival offered a varied programme in which poetry, music, art and storytelling came together. Visitors were invited to reflect on the significance of water, the influence of the landscape and the constant change of the Scheldt Delta. This created an inspiring encounter between culture, heritage and the future of living with water.
The ‘Dichter bij Water’ literary festival is an initiative of the Interreg Flanders-Netherlands project (Be)Leefbare Schelde, born out of a collaboration between the Watersnoodmuseum and the municipality of Puurs-Sint-Amands.
Through partnerships and events such as ‘Dichter bij Water’, the rich history and dynamic character of the Scheldt Delta are celebrated, brought to life and shared with a wide audience. Curious about the full programme for this edition? Take a look at the Watersnoodmuseum’s events page.
