Learning about the cost of energy

On Wednesday, October 23rd, Water2Energy and Dutch Wave Power (DWP) hosted a masterclass at AVANS for 30 international students from Vilnius, Madrid, Vienna, and ’s Hertogenbosch, exploring Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE).

DWP co-founder Sten launched the session with an introduction to ORE and an overview of the Offshore For Sure project. Reinier then presented Water2Energy’s Vertical Axis Water Turbine (VAWT), followed by Sten’s presentation on DWP’s wave energy converter. Both speakers highlighted the unique designs and efficiencies of their technologies.

The session continued with a hands-on workshop led by Reinier and Sten on the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCoE), a crucial metric for evaluating renewable energy projects. In small groups, students tackled business cases centered on either the DWP wave energy converter or Water2Energy’s VAWT. A key takeaway was an “eye-opener” moment as students compared the LCoE of these technologies with the costs of solar panels for an average household.

This masterclass not only deepened technical understanding but also encouraged teamwork, inspiring students to explore new solutions in ocean renewable energy.
