Mural art at Wemeldinge harbour
A new artwork brings the story of Wemeldinge to life along the harbour.

A large mural is being created on the sheet pile wall along Wemeldinge harbour. The artwork will give the public space a new look and showcase the village’s identity in a contemporary way.
The mural ties in with two of De Bevelanden’s narrative themes: ‘Salt and Sweet’ and ‘The Struggle Against the Water’. These stories serve as a way of linking the region’s history, landscape and identity. For Wemeldinge, this brings together elements such as the Oosterschelde, nature, fishing, oyster and mussel farming, agriculture and fruit growing. The centuries-long relationship between the village and the water also forms an important part of the story.
The artwork will form part of the revitalised public space around the harbour. The sheet pile wall, which is approximately 112 metres long, will serve as the support structure for the artwork and will connect to the promenade and other recreational developments around Sluisplein. The mural will thus form part of a wider initiative to make Wemeldinge more attractive and more engaging for residents and visitors alike.
The creation of the artwork will also have a participatory element. Residents and business owners in Wemeldinge can suggest which places, stories, images and characteristics they believe belong to the village. This input will be used as inspiration for the design. Later on, residents and business owners will also be able to express their preference for one of the designs by the selected artist.
The creation of the mural art forms part of the Wemeldinge Tourism & Recreation Masterplan and is made possible in part by a European grant from the Interreg project (Be)Leefbare Schelde.
