On Thursday 26 November, the ‘People and Peat’ Symposium’s study day will take place at the Zeeland Industrial Museum in Sas van Gent.
On Thursday 26 November, the ‘Symposium on People and Peat’ workshop will take place at the Zeeland Industrial Museum in Sas van Gent. Researchers, experts and other stakeholders will share their knowledge on the role of peat in the landscape and the history of the Scheldt Delta Geopark. The programme will cover, amongst other things, the different types of peat in the area, natural peat formation in the past, historical peat extraction and the use of peat as a fuel. It will also examine peat in the present and the future, with a focus on peat restoration, conservation and the role of peat in areas such as the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe.
On Friday 27 November, there will be a field trip to various locations within the Geopark. Participants will visit, amongst other places, unique peat banks in the Westerschelde near Ossenisse, De Putting, the Moervaart, Berlare Donk and the Kalkense Meersen. During the field trip, participants will examine peat formation, landscape development and the traces of human use of peat at these sites.
The symposium also provides an opportunity for lightning talks, during which participants can present their own research, initiatives, project ideas or preliminary findings. In this way, the programme brings together different disciplines and perspectives, creating opportunities for knowledge-sharing within the Scheldt Delta Geopark.
